PhotographyPortrait Photography
Since moving to Toowoomba, I have begun to make time for photography again, and, over the last year, I have begun to take portrait photographs for a couple of close friends of mine, talented opera singers Calista Walters and Cassie Midgeley (and her new company, Kreation Music). A few of my photos of Cassie and Calista can be found to the right - taken to help publicise their projects. The three Christmasy photographs of Cassie were taken to promote her Christmas album, recorded and released in 2021, in collaboration with Toowoomba's After5 choir. I even got to join in on this one, singing with After5, and recording some additional backing vocals for the album - which was a fantastic experience, and very different to sitting behind the microphone in a radio or TV studio! Wildlife and Scenery Along with experimenting with portrait photography, I have enjoyed taking my camera on my travels - particularly on my visits to Lady Elliot Island. This has given me some great opportunities to play around with both landscape and wildlife photography, with some of the results shown to the right. I've found the birds of Australia to be particularly willing participants in my photographic endeavours - with the New Holland Honeyeater, shown to the right, being a great example! The most amazing experiences I've had with wildlife photography have, however, come at Lady Elliot Island, in the waters at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef. Whilst at the magical island, I've managed to get some incredible footage of turtles, manta rays, whales, dolphins, and sharks - as well as beautiful coral, and many of the reef's smaller denizens. A couple of turtle photos from my early trips are shown to to the right - I still have to go through tens of thousands of other photos to find the best - so watch this space! Astrophotography As a teenager, I was an avid astrophotographer, and since I moved to Toowoomba, in 2014, I have taken up the hobby again - although I get far fewer opportunities to get out under the stars with my camera than I would like! A few years back, I purchased a Sky Watcher Star Adventurer camera drive, and a couple of nice Samyang lenses, which have allowed me to start taking some really pretty pictures of the sky. To the right, you can see just a few of my images - from comet C/2020 F8 SWAN (along with a photobombing Eta Aquariid meteor) to the beautiful star clouds of Rho Ophiuchi.
