Crux Australis and the pointers

Media

As a passionate science communicator, I am always delighted to talk to the media about all things astronomical. Over the years, this has given me the opportunity to work with some fantastic journalists, and allowed me to appear in documentaries, on global TV news broadcasts, and to have regular slots on regional and national radio, here in Australia.

I currently have regular weekly slots on ABC Queensland's Drive and Evenings shows, and will also have a regular weekend slot in 2022, talking with Alex Easton about that many fun things that people might not know about space.

Amongst the most enjoyable media engagements with which I have been involved were two live outside broadcasts with Kelly Higgins-Devine, on ABC Evenings. For those broadcasts, I spent three hours live on-air as a presenter, rather than as a guest to be interviewed. I had a great time on the other side of the microphone, and really look forward to our next such broadcast, likely to come in late 2022.

In 2021, I was involved with an episode of ABC's Catalyst documentary series, 'Mars: The Hunt for Life', which was first broadcast on March 2nd, here in Australia. I had the pleasure of talking to international TV news station Al Jazeera, and appearing on Ireland: AM to talk about the release of a US report into Pentagon-documented UFO sightings.

I regularly give interviews for online articles published by outlets around the globe - most frequently the ABC here in Australia. I have also seen a gradual increase in my being quoted by outlets that never actually contacted me, taking quotes from articles I have written in the past, and repurposing them to fit! The first time this happened, it came as something of a shock - I'd much rather talk to you myself than be quoted from an old article, taken out of context!

Over the years, I have also appeared as a guest on a number of podcasts, on a wide variety of topics. If you want to listen in, a selection of those podcasts can be found below!

Canyoning, and having great fun in the water, with the amazing Prof Tamara Davis whilst filming the ABC Catalyst documentary 'Mars: The Hunt for Life'. That documentary can be watched online: follow the link!

On Al Jazeera, in 2021, talking about China's first Mars lander and rover, Zhurong, touching down safely on the Red Planet on 14th May, 2021.

In late 2021, working with USQ's excellent Media and Comms team, I started presenting a weekly series of fun animated shorts for Twitter, Instagram and Tiktok, discussing current highlights in the night sky, and exciting new astronomy and space news - anything that takes my fancy!
